Alexisjoyvipaccess: Congrats on the terrific success with your career! Can you tell us what inspired you to focus your life on acting?
Kai Wener: Thank you so much! I think it just came naturally. My parents have always told me that I was full of personality. As a toddler, I would run around the house singing and re-creating commercials that I had memorized from TV. This led to auditioning in front of casting directors and booking print, national commercials and TV shows. Right now, at 10-years-old, I’m inspired by creative people that write amazing scripts and create roles that I can audition for and bring to life!
Alexisjoyvipaccess: You also have a fantastic role in the hit FOX show, The Orville. What is it like for you working on the show?
Kai Wener: It is amazing! I play a character by the name of Ty Finn who lives on The Orville. Working on a sci-fi show that takes place 400 years into the future has been the best! I get to see all of the sound stages behind the scenes. There are amazing sets, props and special effects that are so incredible. Each episode is like filming a mini-movie for several weeks at a time. To top it off, I get to learn from well-established actors like Scott Grimes and directors like Jon Cassar. I mean, who gets to wake up and work in a spaceship for the day?
Alexisjoyvipaccess: Is there anything that you have learned from working with Seth MacFarlane in The Orville that sticks out to you the most?
Kai Wener: Mr. Seth MacFarlane has definitely taught me how to be a professional and to always give 100%. What people may not see is that he cares so much about this show and is always involved when we film to make sure that we give our best for the fans with every take. Since my first day, Mr. MacFarlane has always had the same expectations from me as he does from all of the cast, even though I’m a kid. Being able to work with him has showed me that if I am going to be successful in this industry, I have to be committed and be able to adjust to the challenges of making a TV show – like last minute script changes, long days on set, or juggling filming and schoolwork.
Alexisjoyvipaccess: If you could see anything happen to your character in future episodes of The Orville, what would you like it to be?
Kai Wener: Of course, I always keep my fingers crossed that The Orville will continue for many seasons so that everyone can see Ty Finn grow up and go through more adventures, but as the youngest person on the show, I would love to see a situation where Captain Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) tells Ty, “You’ve got the conn” and lets me give the orders to the crew of The Orville! I mean, what kid wouldn’t want to be the captain of a spaceship or tell a space crew what to do even if it’s for a little while!
Alexisjoyvipaccess: You also co-starred in Nickelodeon’s Game Shakers. What was that like for you?
Kai Wener: I had a ball co-starring on Nickelodeon’s Game Shakers. I played a young version of one of the main characters on the show, Triple G, played by Benjamin Flores Jr. My scene was with his on-screen dad, Double G, played by Kel Mitchell. The coolest thing about working on Game Shakers was that I was a fan of the show and watched it every week, but I have to admit, that also made me super nervous. When I arrived the first day, I had to get my schoolwork done in the classroom on set. As soon as I entered the class, I immediately met the cast, who was also doing their schoolwork. All of the kids on the show were so welcoming and just as nice in person, which helped to make me comfortable and got rid of any nerves I had. I also love watching old school movies as well, so I was really excited to work with Kel Mitchell. By the time I had finished filming, he had helped me master his famous line from his movie, Good Burger. It went a little something like this, “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?”
Alexisjoyvipaccess: If you could guest-star in any other TV show, which one would it be?
Kai Wener: If I could guest-star in any other TV show, it would be Teen Titans Go, which is one of my favorite cartoons right now. I haven’t had the chance to do much voice-over work yet, and I would love the chance to be the voice of a young super hero, or better yet, a young super villain!
Alexisjoyvipaccess: What would be your dream role to portray?
Kai Wener: Hands down, my dream role would be to portray Miles Morales from the Spider-Man comic books. I have been speaking this into existence for a long time because Miles Morales and I have so much in common! We are both multi-ethnic, both of our fathers are police-officers, we both admire the original Spider-Man, and are both unique by choice. Not to mention, I think I definitely resemble him! I have been a fan of Miles Morales since I started reading at 5-years-old and a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since I started watching movies. I think it’s only a matter of time until the MCU incorporates Miles into their movies, and when they do, fingers crossed, I’ll get the opportunity to read for it!
Alexisjoyvipaccess: If you could work alongside any other actor or actress in a project, who would you like it to be?
Kai Wener: If I could work with any actor, it would be Will Smith, and if I could work with any actress, it would be Letitia Wright, who played “Shuri” in Black Panther. I became a huge fan of Will Smith when I saw him in Men in Black and heard his music. He is very talented and one of the only actors that can go from making people laugh, to being an awesome action star, then to doing a song for a movie’s soundtrack. I would love to work with Letitia Wright because to me, she was the break-out star in Black Panther. She was so funny, but fierce at the same time. And how awesome would it be to work with a Disney princess!
Alexisjoyvipaccess: Lastly, if you could bring out one message to all of your fans, what message would that be?
Kai Wener: One of the things I’ve learned since being on The Orville is that sci-fi fans are the best. They have been so supportive of the show and of my character, Ty Finn. I want to say, thank you and to keep rockin’ with us because season two will be a blast! I have been able to meet and do things that a kid my age could only imagine! I hope that myself and everyone on The Orville can continue to entertain and make the fans proud!
