When power corrupts, a hero will rise. There are a lot of movies out about warriors, but none of them like the way the story is told about courageous leader, Jan Žižka. Medieval is a movie with gore and grit, and it’s more than just that. It’s a story about justice, freedom, and love where you least expect it. If you hadn’t known about Jan Žižka before, this movie is a perfect way to be introduced to one of the greatest warriors history has ever seen.

Set before the Hussite Wars, Medieval is inspired off of the true story of Žižka. The Holy Roman Empire is without a leader after the death of its reining emperor. It quickly becomes a battle of brothers as King Wenceslas of Czech and King Sigismund of Hungary fight to claim the throne. In order to prevent Lord Rosenberg from claiming power alongside King Sigismund and letting corruption triumph, Lord Boresh connives a plan where he hires the great Jan Žižka to kidnap Lord Rosenberg’s fiancee, Lady Katherine. As Žižka does everything he can to save Lady Katherine, he gathers a vast army for battle, and he soon learns that both love and loyalty from his people are keys to becoming the unrivaled warrior that he is.

Medieval stars a top-notch cast of some of the best of the best in the industry. Profound actor Ben Foster exceptionally takes on the role of Jan Žižka, with the iconic Michael Caine as Lord Boresh, the stupendous Matthew Goode as King Sigismund, the outstanding Sophie Lowe as Lady Katherine, and the brilliant Til Schweiger as Lord Rosenberg. There couldn’t have been a more stellar cast to bring this motion picture to life in the captivating way it was executed.

Director Petr Jákl did a remarkable job making this movie feel like you are watching a documentary on Žižka. It felt so genuine and captured the barbarity of that period of time, while also having a balance of love. The juxtaposition of violence with the tenderness of the love story is something worth exploring in the film.

Director Jákl, actor Sophie Lowe, and more had a wonderful time attending the premiere of Medieval on Sept. 7 at The London Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

“I started this journey 11 years ago and I didn’t know how it’s going to be,” said Jákl upon greeting guests inside the screening event. “I didn’t know if I can get the money for [it], if I could write a script which could be shot, and of course, I didn’t know if some good actors would work with me, with a guy from Eastern Europe. We basically have never done anything like this back there. It was a dream. It was a big dream for me.”
