Whatever you do, don’t wind up the toy monkey! 😬 Horror movie fans, it’s time to rejoice as the highly-anticipated film, The Monkey, is beating its drum and making its way to theaters on Feb. 21. The gory film, which has the perfect balance of frights and laughs, is based off of Stephen King’s short story and is produced by James Wan. Written and directed by the great Osgood Perkins, The Monkey follows twin brothers who come across a toy monkey. While it may look like a harmless childhood toy, the monkey couldn’t be far from that. In fact, “it’s evil, it’s basically the devil.” The monkey is the cause of a series of jaw-dropping and outrageous deaths, and continues to terrorize the twin brothers and those around them 25 years later.
There’s no better way to watch a film like this than with some extra spookiness, right? NEON hosted a special screening and immersive event for The Monkey on Feb. 3 and added some eeriness to the experience by hosting it at the Cathedral Mausoleum at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
Attendees had an unforgettable and out of this world experience at the event, which even featured a fake funeral for one of the film’s characters, Uncle Chip. The event had so many spectacular photo opportunities including Uncle Chip’s hearse outside of the mausoleum, an area inside where you can pay your respect to the beloved uncle, and more. Guests were able to really feel like they were in the movie with their very own toy monkey popcorn bucket. For those who may be faint-hearted when it comes to scary movies, a little liquid courage can definitely do the trick! That’s why the event’s amazing signature drinks featuring LALO Tequila were perfect to sip on while watching the flick.
Then, it was time to get a sneak peek of the movie before it releases to the public! The 98 minutes of The Monkey goes by so fast as there truly is never a dull moment in the film. The Monkey stars Theo James, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, and Tatiana Maslany. The flick had all guests (and will definitely have all movie theater-goers) gasping at every gruesome death, as each wild demise was juxtaposed with some hilarious, dark humor.
I had a phenomenal time attending the special screening and immersive event of The Monkey and I truly have never experienced something like this before! It was such a unique and thrillingly good way to watch this suspenseful film.
