Alexisjoyvipaccess: What influenced you to get your start in the music industry?

Spencer Kane: Music has always been a part of our home since I was born. I have always sang at home or church as a young kid. When I was 10 I recorded my first original song called “Do Ya” and that was kind of a spark to getting me interested. But one day my dad heard me singing “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5 and said he thought I was sounding pretty good. I tried out for a local County Idol like competition and came in 2nd place. The judges were from around the state and told me I had a chance to do something with music if I stuck with it. Then I auditioned for X-Factor locally for a chance to get in front of Simon Cowell directly and came in 2nd place out of a hundred or more guys trying out. That encouraged me to keep trying. So I recorded an original song in 2010 and put it on youtube. It got a lot of views, so that helped me get more involved in music. I finally chose to keep doing music.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: Where do you get your inspiration for your music?

Spencer Kane: As far as music style, I listen to a lot of Top 40, R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap. But for lyrics it’s usually from my own life experiences or hearing other teens experiences. I have several artists that inspire me too.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: Do you have a favorite song off your EP, “One of the Kind”? If so, which song is it and why?

Spencer Kane: I’ve been asked this before and it’s like asking a parent which kid is their favorite. I like each one for different reasons. I know ONE OF THE KIND has reached a lot of kids around the world and that is reason enough to like that. I also know that REASON TO BE is my favorite to sing (vocally) because I like how my voice sounds in that song. MOVE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION is special cause I basically helped create the music from the start where most of my songs are produced by a composer and I add lyrics to them, but on this one I did most of everything. BLUE SKY is a cover song that I used to sing when I was in 4th grade in my car rides to school with my mom, so it’s special for that reason. 413 is becoming a very popular track from the EP and it’s based on my life verse of Philippians 4:13 and how I can overcome any obstacles along the way in life. So all have special meaning to me.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: Your music is being played in LA, Australia, Chile and many other radio stations. What is it like for you having your music being played and recognized worldwide?

Spencer Kane: What’s tough about this is that while it’s true that radio stations play my music, I’m still not really known by many people considering how many other artists are trying to get discovered too. It’s like being a needle in a stack of needles when trying to be noticed by fans and industry people. I have a loyal fan base, yes, but even with radio airplay, I’m not known by a lot of people yet. I know if I keep working hard that someday it may happen, but I’m thankful for what I have now anyway.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: What is the feeling like for you being able to perform live in front of all your fans?

Spencer Kane: I think that is a big reason I keep trying. I love seeing fans respond when I’m on stage. However, some of the places I’ve played have been hard too. Some fans just stare, stand there, and never get into it. That’s a tough part of performing. I think a lot of them are trying to figure out what I’m about, so I get it. But crowds that know me and have heard my stuff before, they are fun to perform for because they get into it.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: You were also nominated for ‘Indie Pop Artist of the Year’ in the AI Music Awards in Los Angeles. What was your reaction like when you found out about receiving this wonderful recognition?

Spencer Kane: It was an honor when I saw who I was competing against. It happened early on in my career, so I think it was kind of surreal. It takes a lot of hard work to make good music and I’m thankful that a panel of judges felt that my music was worth nominating.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: You also are an avid supporter of anti-bullying. Can you tell us a little bit more about your work with your “Be One of the Kind” organization?

Spencer Kane: Be One Of The Kind is a movement I started last year after writing the song. I go into schools and perform and talk to students about the importance of choosing KINDNESS as the best solution to overcome bullying. I am a spokesman for PACER Organization who partners with Facebook, Disney, The Ellen Show, the U.S. Whitehouse Council For Bullying Prevention, and other actors and singers. We share the importance of preventing bullying before it starts by educating students and adults about it.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: Besides singing, what are some other things you enjoy doing when you get some free-time?

Spencer Kane: I have always been an athlete. I’ve played basketball since I was 4 and baseball since 7. I’ve had to set aside my school team sports because of music, but I still play basketball every chance I get. I always dreamed of playing basketball in college, so it’s a big part of who I am. I play Xbox and hang out with family and friends when I’m not traveling or doing music stuff.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: What other upcoming projects are you working on that your fans can look forward to?

Spencer Kane: I just released the first song of 2014, CINDERELLA, on iTunes and Amazon and other online retail stores. I’m especially excited about this song because it’s my first love song that I wrote and recorded. I’ve sang cover songs that are love songs, but never wrote one of my own. So it’s a first for me. I have other new songs I’ve recorded this past fall in Chicago, New York, Nashville and Atlanta that I’m excited to release this year at some point. I think fans will be shocked to hear my new stuff. I mean, my EP from last year was a huge step forward for me as an artist and has helped me gain a larger fan base, but this new music is a lot different and fans will be shocked. I’ve already had dozens of fans email and message me about Cinderella and how they can’t believe how they didn’t expect it to sound so good. I mean, I laugh cause I think they may have expected it to sound bad. LOL But I think since my voice change has finally finished up for the most part, I just sound a lot older in the recordings now.

Alexisjoyvipaccess: Lastly, if you could bring out one message to all your fans – what message would that be?

Spencer Kane: First of all, God loves everyone. I’m a Christian, but I don’t try to shove it down people’s throats. I use my voice as a way to encourage fans that they have hope. I want my music to always give hope and a smile on their face. So I guess my message is that when so many artists try to record lyrics filled with drama, anger, judgment, sex, partying, and other things that won’t lead to long happiness, I want them to find artists that inspire them to be better people and make better choices.
