Nickelodeon is home to a countless amount of shows that have made the greatest impacts on our childhoods and in our lives as a whole. Rugrats is definitely one of those classic shows that brings back all the nostalgia. Well, prepare for some of the greatest news that will make your entire weekend — the BABIES ARE BACK!! Yes, that’s right! Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures announced they have greenlit 26 brand-new episodes of the show along with a live-action film featuring CGI characters from Paramount Players. We know, we can’t contain our excitement either!
Both the TV series and the film will star the magnificent characters we’ve all come to know and love: Tommy, Chuckie, Lil, Phil, Susie and Angelica, but some extra surprises are in store as some new characters will also be introduced. (OMG!!) According to the press release, “Original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain will return to the TV series as executive producers. The Rugrats movie will be written by David Goodman and is set to be released on November 13th, 2020 by Paramount Players, the division of Paramount Pictures that develops and produces co-branded feature films with Viacom’s leading media networks. Rugrats is the seventh film title announced in connection with this cross-company initiative.”
“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures,” said Sarah Levy, COO, Viacom Media Networks; and Interim President, Nickelodeon. “What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.” (source: press release)
Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Players shared his excitement over the relaunch of Rugrats and said, “Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans. Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children.” (source: press release)
Nickelodeon has been bringing back many of its legendary shows for this new generation to enjoy. Nickelodeon aired Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie in 2017 and announced the return of two more specials: Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim. In addition, Nickelodeon also revealed the return of Blue’s Clues and brought back the iconic game show, Double Dare, which premiered on June 25th on Nickelodeon. It’s the ultimate #throwback and we’re totally living for it!
