OVO… more like… OH WOW. Cirque du Soleil is truly something else. The renowned entertainment company and largest contemporary circus producer in the world has created a countless amount of brilliant productions and has traveled to places all over the world bringing great wonder to awe-stricken spectators. Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is a bustling and dazzling show that takes audience members into a jubilant and vibrant ecosystem filled with a fluttering array of fantastic insects. Now, Cirque du Soleil is bringing its great magic to Los Angelenos with its production of OVO running from now through May 1 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Colorful, creative, energetic, and nothing short of captivating, OVO is a wow-worthy show that should not be missed. Written and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO steps inside a world of crickets, butterflies, and dragonflies, oh my. When a mysterious egg appears within this zestful atmosphere, the egg serves as a symbol of the life cycle. Throughout the two-hour long performance, we’re introduced to two lovebirds (or shall we say, love insects), who take us on a zealous journey of new beginnings and great passion.

OVO introduces us to three, main characters: the adorable, lovable and sassy Ladybug, the larger-than-life, confident and quirky fly known as The Foreigner, and the leader of the insect pack, Master Flipo. The juxtaposition of each of these characters makes for a memorable show and a great balance between personalities. One of the many fun parts about this production is how interactive it is, so be sure to look at every corner of the venue as the lovely Ladybug may be walking right by with her strawberry in tow or The Foreigner making sure you’re keeping clean and safe with some hand sanitizer… er, bug spray.
As with every Cirque du Soleil production, there’s a lot of elements that makes the show as unforgettable as it turns out to be. First off, the performances of the cast-members is one word: mind-blowing. Remember how we said OVO is more like OH WOW? Well, after watching the show, you’ll know why. With elegant, aerial performances, jaw-dropping, contortionist moves and a trapeze act that will leave you at the edge of your seat, there’s a special kind of gift and talent that Cirque du Soleil performers have that is truly mesmerizing.

Then, there’s the costumes. Costume designer Liz Vandal’s work in this production is superb and all of the costumes help accentuate the movements of the Cirque du Soleil performers. The costumes are eye-catching and are a pivotal part of what fully immerses the audience into the show. And of course, there’s the music. Composer and musical director, Berna Ceppas created the score for OVO. Every moment of the show, you’ll find your foot tapping along to the beats of bossa nova, samba, funk, and electro music. A fun fact according to the press kit is that Ceppas actually sampled insect sounds to create his magnificent score, which is why when we hear the music in the production, we really feel like we’re inside a lively, biodiverse home of bugs.
Creating a set for a show as extravagant as Cirque du Soleil is not an easy feat, but designer Gringo Cardia effortlessly brought the set design to life in such a phenomenal way. Cardia was able to create an ambience like no other while still accommodating for the great space needed to do all of the exceptional stunts, acrobatics and dances.
