AlexisJoyVIPAccess: Congratulations on the amazing success with your career! Can you tell us what inspired you to focus your life around music?

Mary-Clair: Thank you so much! My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by music. I’ve grown up watching artists take the stage at shows around the world, sing their songs in the recording studio, and make a difference in people’s lives through their music. It inspired me and I fell in love with it at an early age. I’ve always known it’s the path for me, and I couldn’t imagine spending my life doing anything else!

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: You recently released your new single, “Heaven in the Way.” What was the creative process like making this song?

Mary-Clair: About two years ago, I started working with the legendary producer (and also my co-writer) Tedd T. I brought him some demos of song ideas I had and we fixated on “Heaven in the Way.” Over time, we began re-working and re-visiting the song, tweaking the lyrics and the sound. Since it’s such an emotional concept, I wanted to get it just right. I tried to capture those initial feelings you get when someone you love passes away, so each time we stepped back into the studio to tweak it, it was heavy. But now that it’s out, I’m glad we took our time. I couldn’t be happier with it.

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: Do you have a favorite lyric from the song?

Mary-Clair: My favorite lyric from “Heaven in the Way” might have to be the title lyric, “It’s so much harder now with Heaven in the way.” When we were in the studio, I initially had some different ideas there, and during the recording process, Tedd asked me, “What do you actually want to say there?” And I told him, “Well, I feel like Heaven is in the way, but I’m not allowed to say that. No one says that!” Tedd told me, “Yes, you can.” He helped me realize that the more honest I can be in my songwriting, the “better” it will be. It was definitely a turning point in my writing process.

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: You’re a spectacular songwriter. Where do you get your inspiration for writing your songs?

Mary-Clair: When I write, my biggest struggle is that I try to be someone else. Now, I’m beginning to understand that my best songwriting comes from when I’m writing what’s true and what’s happened to me, not when I’m trying to replicate others’ sounds and styles. So when I write, it’s extremely personal and can get hard at times, but I’ve found that the more honest I am, the more people can relate and enjoy the music.

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: If you could collaborate with any musician on a song, who would it be?

Mary-Clair: Currently, Justin Bieber. If I was born 40 years ago, Michael Jackson.

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: What are some upcoming projects that you’re working on that fans can stay tuned for?

Mary-Clair: Tedd and I are currently collaborating on some more songs that will be out very soon. And not long after that, an EP will follow!

AlexisJoyVIPAccess: Lastly, if you could bring out a message to all of your fans, what message would that be?

Mary-Clair: Since the release of “Heaven in the Way,” I’ve received so many messages from people expressing their gratitude for the song. It’s kind of given me that feeling that I’ve found something worth pursuing and I don’t want to stop anytime soon! I plan to keep making impactful music that will hopefully help people through what they’ve experienced and give them a new sense of meaning moving forward.
