It was a great pleasure interviewing Mikey Wax!

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q1: What made you focus your life around music?

Mikey Wax: I’ve been playing piano and writing songs since I was 8 years old. Music has always been my love and passion, and it’s probably the only thing I know how to do at this point :)

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q2: How would you describe your type of music?

Mikey Wax: It falls under pop/rock, but I’ve always tried to write music and lyrics that was a bit more artistic or meaningful rather than just  your everyday pop song. I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock which kind of taught me to think outside the box in terms of chords and melodies, and I’ve done my best to tie that in with what is happening in music today.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q3: Who and/or what inspires your music?

Mikey Wax: I’ve always been a songwriter first, so everyday life and people around me are what inspires me. Sometimes I’ll overhear a conversation in a restaurant and that can spark an idea, or sometimes it’s a very personal relationship or event in my life. I think it’s good to draw inspiration from a variety of angles.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q4: What musical instruments do you play and do you try to incorporate them someway into your music?

Mikey Wax: I play piano, guitar and sing. I pretty much write every song by strumming a rhythm on guitar or finding some cool chords on piano and humming a melody over it with words that make no sense. Once you find a melody that strikes an emotion in you, usually a few words start to form from that and you try to make sense about what your feeling and saying.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q5: You got your start in the music industry when your song, “In Case I Go Again” was featured on Youtube’s homepage. In your opinion, how has your life changed since then?

Mikey Wax: Since then I’ve had a lot of fans who wanted to hear that song and others in person, so I started touring pretty heavily the past 2 years. I’ve done several hundred shows including a lot of private house concerts in fans homes. The house concerts started because when I got featured on YouTube, I didn’t have a booking agent and venues didn’t want to hire me at first with no proven sales. I put the word out to fans that I was going on tour but only able at the time to play intimate house concerts. The response was amazing, as was the experience, and it’s something I still continue to this day.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q6: How did it feel to be on tour with Elliott Yamin and Howie Day? What was your favorite part about being on tour?

Mikey Wax: Both tours have been amazing growing experiences as far as being a performer, and as a way for me to expand my fan base. I love performing and connecting with an audience, and having the chance to open for great artists like Elliott and Howie was very surreal. Both of them were really supportive as well, and helped show me what life on the road is like.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q7: What kind of emotions were you feeling when you performed for the first time on tour? Do you still get those feelings when you perform now?

Mikey Wax: At first, I was too nervous to really feel much of anything else. The shows used to all be blurs. But now, I’ve learned to turn those nerves into something more positive by embracing it, and enjoying each show and my time on stage with the audience. It’s really an honor to be asked to be up there on stage and connect with people through my music.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q8: What was a “must-have” for you while you were on tour?

Mikey Wax: GPS, lots of water, vitamin C, coffee, iphone. I don’t know how musicians ever toured before there was GPS or an iphone.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q9: What upcoming projects are you working on that your fans should look forward to?

Mikey Wax: I’m actually starting to record a holiday album that I will be releasing in November. It’s pretty weird to sing holiday music in the beginning of summer, but I’m really excited about these songs and think they have timeless feel to them that people will hopefully find both familiar and refreshing.

Alexisjoyvipaccess Q10: Through your music, what message would you like to bring out to your fans?

Mikey Wax: Since we live in a twitter world, I’m trying to narrow that message down to 140 characters. I’ll probably have to get back to you soon, though I’m sure it falls somewhere in the line of many musicians before me… love, happiness, friends, family and peacefulness.
