A brand new day means a brand new song to wake Oppy up to. July 7, 2003 marked a monumental day. It was the day the Opportunity rover launched to begin its mission to search for signs of ancient water on Mars. Opportunity truly lived up to its name. It was an admirable rover, one that far exceeded everyone’s expectations. A rover that truly seized the opportunity and made space history in more ways than imaginable.

Amblin Entertainment’s Good Night Oppy is the inspiring story about the Opportunity rover that was set for a 90-day mission but ended up surviving for 15 years. Viewers will simply be moved throughout the entire 105 minutes of the documentary. The awe-inspiring film chronicles the trials, tribulations, and triumphs the dedicated team went through as they watched Opportunity serve as an epitome of perseverance, dedication, and invincibility. From every laugh to every tear shed, every success to every stress, this wondrous rover has taught us all one beautiful thing – there is opportunity everywhere you look.

As heard in the documentary’s trailer, “yeah, it’s only a robot, but she becomes a family member,” and that statement couldn’t be any more true. This film allows us all to feel like we were a part of such a significant and unforgettable period of time in history, and it brings us in the room with the trailblazers and space pioneers who made it all possible. Throughout the movie, we see all of the pressure the team went through to get Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit to the Red Planet, and all that pressure truly paid off. In Good Night Oppy, we all are able to form our own great bond with this unparalleled robot.

Amazon Prime Video hosted a marvelous celebration in honor of the premiere of Good Night Oppy at The Culver Theater in Culver City, California on Nov. 10. Director Ryan White welcomed guests at the event before a wonderful, special screening of the movie.

“Once I became a documentary filmmaker, I’ve always wanted to make a film about space in some way, and I’ve been looking for 20 years for the story that really moved me in a way that I wanted to spend a few years on it, and then this story came into our lives in 2019 and we just fell in love with it,” said White. “It was such a thrill to get to make because it really restored that inner child in myself, and I know a lot of the people that worked on this film, those senses of awe and wonder and discovery that sometimes will leave us into our adulthood, we felt like we really got to recapture in making this film.”
