Earth Day is right around the corner, and it is a day that reminds us all that we can get up and help protect the wonderful environment we live in today and everyday! So, how do YOU celebrate Earth Day? Do you recycle, or help plant new plants in your community, or do you help save endangered orangutans like Allie Boyer, this month’s The HALO Effect profiled teen?! This month’s episode of Nickelodeon’s inspiring and spectacular show, The HALO Effect, which will premiere on Earth Day on Friday, April 22nd at 8:30 PM ET / PT, profiles Allie Boyer, a teen who helps endangered orangutans through her organization, Purses For Primates. The HALO Effect is hosted by the magnificent and radiant Sydney Park.
According to the press release, “Boyer first developed a love for orangutans at the age of six. After learning how endangered they were due to deforestation, she started her own organization, Purses for Primates, to help bring awareness to the cause. With the help of Boyer’s family, friends and classmates, Purses for Primates collects gently used purses to resell at fundraisers and donates the profits to Orangutan Outreach. In just six years, her organization has raised over $14,000 and is directly responsible for sending 14 rehabilitated orangutans back to a protected rainforest.
Additionally, Boyer has represented the U.S. at the SAGE (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship) World Cup in South Korea, receiving second place in the “Best Social Enterprise” category. In recognition of her outstanding leadership and hard work, Nickelodeon will award a $10,000 grant to Boyer’s organization.”
As with every outstanding episode of The HALO Effect, each profiled teen brings out a challenge so all of the viewers can join in and help make a positive change! Allie Boyer is bringing out her “HALO Effect Challenge” by asking all of YOU to post your own docu-style videos of your favorite animals or fun facts about an endangered species by using the hashtag #HALOEffectChallenge! Let’s learn more about the The HALO Effect: “The HALO Effect launched in 2013 as a year-round initiative recognizing one deserving teen every month for their work to help and lead others in their community. The initiative was built upon Nickelodeon’s HALO Awards, an annual concert event honoring young community leaders with a grant for their organization and scholarship funds. To date, more than 50 teens across the country have been honored and have received more than $400,000 in grants to fund their non-profit organizations” (source: press release).
